Cold Weather Running in Florida

This has been a really interesting running season for me. I suppose the Disney races set the pace for me, because going out for a run in 40 deg weather doesn't seem like such a big deal anymore. In fact, I am enjoying the heck out of running in the chilly air. It is going to be tough when it warms up in a couple of months - for now I will enjoy it while I can.

During my long run this past week I crossed the 4000 mile mark for miles I have logged since I started logging back in 2006. It has been a super journey. I have met so many interesting folks, blogged and podcasted my way through some challenging times, and now - four years later - I am continuing to grow and enjoy the thrill of the journey.

Thanks for coming along, and be sure to enjoy your own running adventures!

You crack me up with your cold weather gear - I haven't run in shorts for months... But yes, I do think running in chilly weather is nice. You can pretty much always dress for it whereas real heat like you guys get - once you're down to shorts and a vest that's pretty much as minimal as it gets, right?

Your running is really going from strength to strength at the moment - keep enjoying it and inspiring us.

Well, Petra - I acknowledge that cold is relative and I can still run in my shorts for temps in the low 40s or warmer. And I am not fighting snow or ice....but this is NOT typical Florida running weather. And I don't believe I have needed my hat and gloves as much in all my other running as I have this year. In the past, I have retreated indoors or waited until later in the day. Still, I will be struggling to remember this feeling come May!

You are absolutely right, at least you can dress for the chilly weather. With the heat you can only stick to running before the sun comes up and minimal gear.

Still, I think I could be a cold weather (real cold) runner....

Yeah, running in 40 degs is not too bad. Cycling in it has been TOUGH, though, with the wind making things even tougher and colder (add on the wind you create while moving it can make temps feel 10-15 degs colder!).

But, yes, we should enjoy it while we can. Soon enough heat & humidity will be with us.

I love 40 degree running! But I guess that is pretty cold in Florida! I actually don't understand how you guys even run with all the humidity in the summer....much tougher I think.

And 4000 miles...WOW. That's all. WOW.

Wow, that's quite an accomplishment...4000 miles. Keep up the great work!

I love running in 40 degree weather.

Thanks for the advice on ChiRunning and running form!

Yes, I love the cold weather too. I committed to R&R at the end of June, and I think I am going to die in that heat.... I have raced only 3 times above 60, and one was in SoCal....

Congrats on your 4,000 miles...Amazing!!!
